GROW! is a community-wide effort to promote and support gardening in Manitowish Waters. The idea of a community garden in MW was explored first in 2015. The timing was right, however, in the summer of 2018 when one of our founders visited several community gardens in Vilas County and started plans for one in Manitowish Waters.
A steering committee was formed and in September of 2018, the MW Town Board approved a garden site at the Community Center/Airport complex. The (approximate) half-acre parcel is located between the tennis courts and airport terminal. The garden will be built in phases with Phase I planned for completion in the summer of 2019. There is also room for future expansion of the existing site.
GROW! Community Gardeners of Manitowish Waters, Inc. is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) charitable organization focused on offering an accessible gardening venue and camaraderie to individuals and groups in our community. No taxpayer dollars will be used for this project. All costs will be covered by donations and nominal, annual garden plot fees.
The members of the Manitowish Waters Steering Committee are indebted to a Watersmeet Master Gardener and the leadership teams of the Presque Isle and Land O’Lakes Community Gardens for their unselfish sharing of information, experience, and resources. Without their mentorship and encouragement, our project would not have happened.
As this exciting and ambitious journey continues, sponsorship and broad community support is essential in the form of donations, materials, and volunteer participation.
