The two crane species in North America, the Sandhill and Whooping Crane, are at opposite ends of the population spectrum. Back from the brink of extinction, the rare Whooping Crane is making a steady yet fragile comeback – recovering from a low of only 21 individuals in the wild in 1944, to just over 450 birds today. The Sandhill Crane population, however, has made a robust recovery over the past 50 years, and they now number in the tens of thousands in Wisconsin. Why the big difference? Join an interpretive naturalist from the International Crane Foundation to learn about the differences between these two species and how the innovative projects at the International Crane Foundation safeguard cranes and the amazing places that enrich our lands and our lives. An evening of delicious nibbles and expanding your knowledge. Cash bar and complimentary appetizers from 5-6pm, program from 6-7pm. Preregistration required by 4/4. Program held at Camp Jorn YMCA. 5-7pm $13 ($10 members). 1-877-543-2085, www.discoverycenter.net
