“MARVEL IN MANITOWISH WATERS” PROVIDES CHRISTMAS-TO-NEW-YEAR HOLIDAY WEEK ACTIVITIES Count down to the New Year in Manitowish Waters with low/no cost, family-fun, indoor/outdoor activities during the holiday week regardless of the weather conditions!     ANY DAY!!!!!! EXPLORE THE OUTDOORS (AND INDOORS) * Burn off those holiday calories by getting out on our area trails or ice fishing the area lakes! * Over 10 miles of classic and skate ski trails are available at The North Lakeland Trails located at Hwy K and Papoose Rd * Try the new WinMan Trails – located at Hwy J and Hwy W intersection                  ~ Over 5 miles of classic and skate ski trails & snowshoe trails * North Lakeland Discovery Center has over 13 miles of classic and skate ski trails for you to explore * The area boasts a number of wonderful dining establishments, plus quaint shops & galleries to enjoy * Make plans to spend time in Manitowish Waters at our unique shops – be sure to check out their After Christmas Sales! TUESDAY  ~   12/27 *    Snowshoe – Fireside Yoga – Tea and Snacks – 1pm – Camp Jorn – Enjoy snowy pines and Rest Lake panoramas on our beautiful, groomed trails at Camp Jorn for a 1.5 mile snowshoe, then warm up by the fire with an all-levels Vinyasa yoga class followed by tea, wine and yummy snacks. Bring your own snowshoes please. $15 per person *   Open House with Christmas Crafts ~ 3pm–7pm – Manito Art League will help you create Christmas crafts at Koller Library   WEDNESDAY  ~   12/28 *    Open House with Christmas Crafts ~ 9am–3pm – Manito Art League will help you create Christmas crafts at Koller Library *    River Trail Snowshoe ~ 1pm-3pm – Discovery Center – Follow the Manitowish River with Discovery Center Naturalist Licia Johnson as she guides you down one of the Center’s most picturesque and beautiful trails. Meet at the Tower Road parking lot (Statehouse Lake Trail sign) across from the Ye Olde Shillelagh. Space is limited; advance registration appreciated. $5 per person   THURSDAY  ~   12/29 *    North Lakeland Discovery Center Events: Free Snowshoe Day ~ 9am–4pm – All sizes of snowshoes available for complimentary, onsite use.  Enjoy the crisp air, sights of nature, and celebrate the holiday season! Chili Cookoff ~ 11am – Stop by and try some delicious chili! Chili cook-off lunch available for $5 – Complimentary cider, teas, and coffee too. Horse Drawn Sleigh Rides ~ 11am-2pm – Enjoy the beauty of the Discovery Center by horse-drawn sleigh!  Sponsored by the Manitowish Waters Chamber of Commerce and MW Lions Club ~ it’s a great way to get out and spend time with your family surrounded by the splendor of the season! *    Open House with Christmas Crafts ~ 3pm–7pm – Koller Library   FRIDAY  ~   12/30 *     Open House with Christmas Crafts ~ 9am–3pm – Koller Library *     Candlelit Snowshoe ~ 5pm-7:30pm – Visit the Discovery Center Trails for an early evening snowshoe hike with beautifully lit luminaries paving the way.  The Candlelit Trail is 2 miles in length.  Hot chocolate, s’mores and a bonfire will help keep us warm and cozy. $5 per person *     Enjoy the day exploring one of our numerous nature trails via snowshoe, cross-country skis or foot! Or hop on your sled and ride the well-groomed snowmobile trails…And start the countdown to 2017!   SATURDAY  ~   12/31 *    Fat Tire Biking Demo ~ 10am–3pm – The WinMan Trails – Demos will be available for use on the groomed fat bike trail and the WinMan trail crew will be leading guided rides.   A group of artists have come together to offer an free “open studio” to area artists, visitors and whoever loves being creative. The “studio” will be held at the Manitowish Waters Community Center on the first and third Tuesday each month from 10 – 3 (with exceptions for official town business and other regularly scheduled events).  This informal group welcomes all and provides a venue for people to share their creative energy. Each person should bring projects and supplies for art projects that they are want to work on or are wanting to start.  Participants MUST bring floor and table protection (tarp, drop cloth, plastic sheeting – anything that will totally protect the tables and floors).  Bring a lunch to stay for the whole day or stay for just a few hours.     2017 dates  January 3 and 17 February 7 and 21 March 7 and 21 April 18 May 2 and 16 June 6 and 20 No July Dates August 1 and 15 September 12 and 26 October 3 and 17 November 21 December 5 and 19

Adults and kids will enjoy seeing live birds up close at the North Lakeland Discovery Center through bird banding. Adopt a bird for a memorable experience releasing a banded bird. There are special activities just for kids including “band-a-kid” and a migration challenge game. Just drop by Bobcat Cabin during the public banding demonstration hours.                                                         The North Lakeland Education Foundation presents the 8th Annual Candlelight Ski, Snowshoe & Skate Friday, January 27, 2017, from 5pm to 8pm ~ headquartered at the NL Ice Hockey Hut behind North Lakeland School and utilizing the ice rink and school forest trails. Donations will be accepted at the door for participation. Concessions will be available, featuring hot soups, beverages and snacks ~ New this year –raffle prizes! Bring your own ice skates, while skis and snowshoes are available for rent for a nominal fee (or bring your own) to trek one-mile cross country ski and snowshoe loops lit by candlelight. A crackling fire will be on hand to warm your toes and offer a great place to enjoy  conversation. Proceeds from the event benefit the Foundation’s Bill Sherer Memorial Leadership Scholarship. Bring your family, friends and neighborsand enjoy the fun and fresh air! North Lakeland School is located at the intersection of County Highways K & P at 12686 CTH K, Manitowish Waters. The Bill Sherer Memorial Leadership Scholarship was initiated in 2008 by the North Lakeland Education Foundation to carry on the legacy of Bill Sherer, North Lakeland’s District Administrator from 1970-1988.  Mr. Sherer is remembered fondly by North Lakeland alumni and staff as an influential leader and a role model for those around him.  It is due to the contributions of Mr. Sherer and those like him that the North Lakeland School District has achieved such high academic standards, a legacy that continues to this day. This scholarship is available to 5th, 6th and 7th grade students who would like to participate in a leadership-based program.  In 2009, the Foundation held its first Candlelight Ski, Snowshoe and Skate event at North Lakeland to raise funds for the leadership scholarship.
